9-Day Adventure

Active Fiji

Every part of you engaged.

How It Works

This trip is not about sitting still. It's built for people who feel most alive when they're moving—on water, on foot, underwater. You'll start on the surf breaks of the Coral Coast, raft the highland gorges of the Upper Navua River, cross Viti Levu on foot with the Talanoa Treks team, and finish with some of Fiji's best diving in the north. We grew up in Fiji and this is how we'd do it—guided by local operators we trust, paced to let every experience land, and built so you leave feeling stronger than you arrived.

Day 1

Arrive at Matanivusi

Private transfer from Nadi Airport to the Coral Coast. Matanivusi Beach Eco Resort is quieter than the Denarau properties, thoughtfully built, and sits right on the water.

Check in, find your room, and walk the beach. The resort is boutique—honest hospitality, beachfront bures, the kind of place that feels like coming home instead of checking in. The Frigates surf break sits 20 kilometers away and there's ocean in every direction. Tonight is easy. You've got nine days ahead of you. Settle in.

Worth knowing

  • Frigates surf break 20 km away — well known locally for good reason
  • Quiet arrival setting — perfect for resetting before nine days of movement

Traveller tips

Day 2

Matanivusi, Water Day

Rise early if you want yoga before breakfast. After that, the day is yours. The ocean sits right in front of you and there are enough options to fill a week.

Experienced surfers can access Frigates and several other breaks nearby—J's, Fiji Pipe, Shifties, Vunaniu. Each break has its own personality and the team at Matanivusi knows them. Certified divers have ocean diving available. Kite boarders can check conditions with the resort. Paddleboarders, swimmers, and just-sitting-on-the-beach people are equally welcome. Accommodation includes surfing access, so pick what calls to you.

Worth knowing

  • Frigates, J's, Fiji Pipe, Shifties, Vunaniu — all breaks accessible from resort
  • Ocean diving available for certified divers — healthy reef nearby
  • Kite boarding for the experienced — ask resort about conditions

Traveller tips

Day 3

Rivers Fiji, Upper Navua

Early start. You'll transfer into the highlands for a full day on the Upper Navua River with Rivers Fiji, then overnight in Suva to recover.

The Upper Navua gorges are unlike anything else in the country. Basalt walls rise on both sides, waterfalls drop in from the cliffs, and Grade III rapids keep you focused. The river winds through landscape that few tourists ever see. Rivers Fiji is the operator we trust—they've been running this section for years and know every rapid. Book the full-day option to cover the best sections. After you're done on the water, transfer to Suva for the night. The capital gives you time to decompress and see a slice of Fiji most visitors skip.

Worth knowing

  • Upper Navua River with Rivers Fiji — gorges, basalt walls, waterfalls
  • Grade III rapids that keep you honest and awake
  • Suva overnight — decompress and see Fiji's capital

Traveller tips

  • Early start — be ready to go
  • Bring a dry bag for valuables
  • Full-day option covers best river sections

Days 4–6

Talanoa Treks, Cross Highland Hike

Talanoa Treks collects you from Suva around 11am. Three days walking through Fiji's interior—highlands, rivers, villages. The kind of quiet you only find when you've earned it with your feet.

Your guides grew up in this landscape. They know the paths, the villages, the rivers, and the rhythm. Three days means you're not rushing—you're breathing in the highlands, staying in villages with open spirits, learning how people live when they're not catering to tourists. The terrain is real, so Talanoa sends a detailed packing list. Follow it. By day three, when you reach Navala Village, you'll understand why this is the part of the trip most people remember forever. Navala has kept its traditional architecture—one of the few villages in Fiji to do so.

Worth knowing

  • Three days with Talanoa Treks through interior villages and highlands
  • Local guides who grew up in this landscape — genuine hospitality
  • Navala Village at trek end — traditional architecture preserved

Traveller tips

  • Follow Talanoa's packing list closely — the terrain is real
  • Come with genuine curiosity for village stays
  • Proper footwear and fitness help — it's earned quiet
  • This section is what travellers remember when they get home
Volivoli Beach Resort on Fiji's north coast

Days 7–8

Volivoli Beach Resort, Diving

Transfer north to Volivoli Beach Resort on the Rakiraki coast. Two nights to dive, explore the reef, or simply sit with what you've accomplished.

Volivoli and Ra Divers are consistently rated among the best dive operations in the world—not just Fiji. The reef systems off the north coast are diverse and healthy. Soft coral gardens, shark passes, walls that drop deep. Ra Divers offers introductory dives for first timers and advanced multi-tank days for certified divers. The north coast is quieter and less visited than the south. If diving isn't calling you, fishing, kayaking, and paddleboards are all available. Two nights gives you one full day on the water and one to recover or sit by the ocean.

Worth knowing

  • Ra Divers — world-rated operation with intro dives for beginners
  • Diverse reef systems — soft coral gardens, shark passes, walls
  • Alternatives: fishing, kayaking, paddleboards if you're not diving

Traveller tips

  • Book dives in advance if you know you're certified
  • Two nights lets you choose one active day, one rest day
  • North coast reef is less crowded than south
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen for all water activities

Day 9

Departure

After breakfast, your private transfer leaves Volivoli for Nadi Airport. Two and a half hours by road back to where you started.

Sit with what you've done. You've surfed, rafted, hiked, and dived. You've seen Fiji the way few tourists see it—from the water, on foot, and underwater. The drive back gives you time to settle what happened into memory. If you have a late flight or want to decompress before heading home, a night at one of the Denarau properties gives you space to transition. We're happy to arrange that.

Worth knowing

  • Private transfer Volivoli to Nadi Airport
  • Two-and-a-half-hour scenic drive — time to reflect
  • Denarau extension night available if you need transition time

Traveller tips

  • Schedule your flight allowing for the 2.5-hour transfer
  • Last sunrise swim if your timing allows
  • Extension night gives you space to decompress before flying

Good to know

Common questions

Do I need to be an experienced surfer?

Not at all. The water day is yours to design. Surfers access the breaks, divers can dive, kite boarders can go out. Or just enjoy yoga, breakfast, and the ocean view. You pick.

What fitness level do I need for the highlands hike?

Decent fitness helps. Talanoa will send a packing list—follow it. The terrain is real, but your guides adjust pace and take care of you. Three days of walking, not extreme.

Do I need dive certification?

No. Ra Divers offers intro dives for beginners and advanced days for certified divers. The north coast reef is one of the world's best places to start. Alternatives: kayaking, paddleboards, fishing.

What's the best time of year?

May to October (dry season) for clear skies and good water visibility. November to April is wet season but fewer tourists. Both work—confirm with your guide when booking.

Should I book activities in advance?

Yes. Rivers Fiji, Talanoa Treks, and Ra Divers fill up. Book ahead to lock in your spots. We coordinate once you're in.
